Research mentoring for residents, fellows and early-career attending physicians who want to do research and have not yet published. You work at your own pace, ask by message whenever you are stuck, and get a written reply from Dr. Tsai, a radiologist who has taught clinicians research methods and writing for more than a decade.
Mentor: Dr. I-Chen Tsai · The six places people get stuck · Asynchronous messaging
Dr. I-Chen Tsai · InnovaRad
After many years of teaching, Dr. Tsai has found that these are the six places where participants most often get stuck. Together they are his picture of the whole publication process. It is not a staircase: what feels like a problem with a figure is often a question or a design that needs another look, and going back is part of the work. Ask Dr. Tsai from wherever you are.
Turn a problem you see in practice into a question that can be answered and is feasible where you work.
Choose a design that fits your data and your time, and decide the outcomes before you start.
Learn the tools a beginner can use, and analyze the data in a way you can repeat and explain.
Make figures and tables that a reviewer understands at a glance, with legends that stand on their own.
Write the paper in the structure and format of your target journal.
Submit, read the reviewers carefully, and answer every comment.
It is built around written messages, so it fits around call schedules and shifts. You can start when a project is ready.
There are no fixed cohorts and no meeting times. Work when you can, and ask when you are stuck.
Write whenever you are stuck, in any order. There is nothing to pick or tick. Dr. Tsai replies in writing, in principle within one working day.
Your progress page lays out the six places as a map with links to the course resources, and keeps your submission and review record.
Log the journal, the date, the outcome and the number of revision rounds, so the whole path from first draft to decision is in one place.
We ask for a short background profile. Separately, you can choose to let de-identified data be used to study where physicians get stuck on the way to publication. If you decline, you receive the same mentoring.
